Elvis In Tupelo
Elvis is reported to be singing at every possible affair available. He and his parents sing in churches, not just Assembly of God; but, any church featuring all day singings. The Saturday Jamborees with Slim Pickens continue, as Elvis adds more chords to his reportoire. When autumn comes Elvis finds more changes. The family leaves East Tupelo and cross the long mile into Tupelo. They rent a house at 1010 North Green Street, in the black section of Tupelo. Suddenly Elvis is hearing music he has never heard before. The strains of "Old Shep" begin to fade as the thundering sound of "Hound Dog" begins to call. He enrolls in school at Tupelo Public School (later called Milam), he gets a library card from the Lee County Library and he wanders through the neighborhood known as "Shake Rag" listening to the vibrant music coming from the windows and porches. This is where, I believe, although a lot of his rythm was Natural, he picked up the rest

Elvis was 13 years old when he made it at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair & Dairy Show
In his younger years, Elvis is known to have been a loner, yet in his later years, he had to be surrounded by friends and his entourage

Elvis was in 7th grade, with only a few days left in Tupelo, and his father packed them up and headed to Memphis, where work was more plentiful
Elvis With Friends; From Left to Right are: Farley Guy, Elvis, Paul Dougher, and Buzzy Forbes
Once in Memphis, Beale Street may have given him his flair for dressing, but it was Tupelo's county, gospel and blues that shaped his sound. When he left town at age 13, nobody even cared, but when he returned in 1956 to play the Mississippi-Alabama Fair & Dairy Show, no one dared miss the event. Elvis had arrived!
